Context and Narrative: Assignment Five – Making it up – Reflection and Feedback

Reflection

I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this assignment but it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable. The key was definitely to have an artistic intent before starting. I already had an idea in my head so that really helped. The fact that I was working from the memory of a photograph helped too. I could see the scene in my head and this really made it much easier to set up. If I hadn’t had this idea to start with I don’t think it would have been as enjoyable!

I wasn’t entirely sure how far to go with the props and staging. I couldn’t do this outside my own home and our furniture tends towards the modern. I was able to find an old style bed cover and used a duvet as the sheet under the cover. I had some old single valances which i used to cover the bed modern surround. Valences are also a bit old fashioned so fitted the scenario as well. The headboard was also modern, and to get round this I covered it with a throw which made it look a lot less contemporary. I quite enjoyed this part of the process and felt I didn’t really need to go any further with the props. I was surprised at how well some of these fixes worked.

The lighting was probably the trickiest bit of the whole process. I started with just the bedside lamp then added and subtracted different lights until I got something I was happy with. I did do some tweaking in photoshop to highlight the bed a bit more and bring the reading glasses out of the shadows on the floor. Patience was the key with the lighting and just good old trial and error!
